Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine utilizes the body’s own cells to heal and regenerate damaged tissue in mild, or chronic conditions.

Therapies Included Are:

  • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
  • Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) Stem Cells

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich plasma is highly concentrated blood sample that contains isolated cells (platelets) and the fluids portion of blood (plasma). When used as a therapy, PRP can help regenerate and heal tissues by recruiting cells to an area of injury to clean up dead and injured cells. It also releases proteins called “Growth Factors”. These growth factors are responsible for tissue regeneration.

What is the Process for My Pet to Receive Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

After your veterinarian determines that PRP is right for your pet, he/she can process and treat your pet during an office visit in hospital. A blood sample is taken from your pet, then processed using a specialized system that concentrates the platelets and plasma. Once the sample processing is complete, it is injected directly into the area of injury. PRP is used to help repair damaged cells. Statistics show that therapeutic effects last between 6-12 months for dogs with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.

This Therapy is Ideal for:

  • Any tendon or joint damage
  • Orthopedic surgeries
  • Arthritis
  • Partially torn ligament(s)

BMAC Stem Cells

(Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate)

Stem cells have the ability to differentiate into any type of cell. They can also activate other surrounding stem cells and recruit additional cell types to aid in wound healing and tissue repair. When using Stem cell therapy, a small amount of bone marrow is collected from the femur while your pet is placed under anesthesia. Anesthesia is required for the comfort and safety of your pet. Once the sample is processed in our specialized machine, the stem cells are directly injected into the area of injury. Stem cell therapy is ideal for any type of torn ligament, this is to help rebuild damaged cells.

Both of these therapies is an alternative to surgical intervention to help aid in the repair of damaged tissue. It can provide healing and prolong the overall comfort of your pet. Here at Michigan City Animal Hospital, we strive to provide top quality care for your loved one.  Please consult with your veterinarian to create a customized treatment for your pet’s therapeutic needs.
